No matter how you look at it planting food plots is fun! Its fun to get out side maybe if you have kids get them involved so they can have fun as well. Lots of folks just plant a fall food plot for hunting season and that is perfectly fine. But what is a food plot program?
Food plot programs
A food plot program is is where you set your property up where you have something green and growing for as many months as possible. This does two things.
its building your soil year round. The healthier the soil the more nutritious the plants are the more attractive they are.
You have year round food so the deer can be on a consistent pattern.
The whole idea of the program is to have food for as many months out of the year as possible. There is several ways to do this.
You can have perennials such as clover on your land. This provides at least 8-10 months of food depending what state you are in. Clover is generally easy to take care Mow it a few times a year and you are good to go with plenty of tonnage for the wildlife.
You can do rotations of buck wheat planted in the spring then jump right to your fall plot with things like brassicas or grains.
This one is KEY! Planting cereal grains such as winter wheat or winter rye. Wheat and rye fill the gap of no food. When you mix in grains in the fall you have green food all the way until January. Then you get warm days in early march and it perks right up. Its also the very first thing that greens up before spring green up so you can provide 1-3 months of extra food before natural browse can take over.
As you can see having a food plot program is the way to go. Even if you only have a 1/4 acre you can still have something green and growing for many months out of the year. This will not only feed wildlife it will also improve your soil which will save you money in the long run.
