APPLE TREES FOR DEER
When we picked up this new hunting lease in PA i knew it was going to be a challenge to hold deer and was going to take a lot of work to make it a half was decent hunting spot. The great state of PA is not known for huge whitetails. Although in my opinion anything can happen. Each piece of land has a mature buck roaming around. Depending on what state you are in is going to determine how big that buck might be. (in a general sense, deer in mid west typically have the potential to be bigger then say deer in the north east)
The fun of land management to me anyway, is trying to get the most out of what you have available. Not everyone has access to hundreds and hundreds or thousands of acres to hunt on including myself! With that said we have to take advantage of what we have. Each piece of land has its own potential and each has its own thing that you can make better. More food, enhancing food that is already there, better cover, better watering source for deer etc. Make what you have available better the best that you can.
Here is a few pictures from this same lease (before and after slide show)
As you can see with some hard work and a little motivation things can go a long way. While on the Land we noticed it had apple trees and crab apple trees. To my knowledge they have not produced apple in about 10 years according to the land owner. Obviously they have not been taken care of in many years or have had any at all. (I think they are about 35-40 years old)
I want as much food on my land as possible (within reason) as i can. I also want the healthiest food available. The whole key is to produce better food then the neighbors that way deer have no reason to leave unless they are pressured which is another story.
There is not many products in the hunting industry that work. (sad but true) We decided to use Antler grow and the NPK to spray these apple trees as a test and also to give them the nutrients they need to be the best. The whole idea is to get these trees to start producing again. Its fun to see and do test like this to watch the progress with your own eyes. If it wasn't fun we wouldn't do it right? I will update this test over the next few weeks and months.
I made to video to explain things better and i highly encourage you to watch it. while you are these please SUBSCRIBE to the channel. CLICK LINK TO WATCH https://youtu.be/LjdaOvTYV-8
